"The Fierce Urgency of Now"

This is a portrait of Heather Heyer. She is made out of Trader Joe's grocery bags that I collected from fellow mothers in the store after we heard the news of her death in Charlottesville. She died doing something I would do, standing up against fierce racism in her town. I felt so sad and stunned, and although I didn't know her or her family, I feel as many friends that I gathered the materials from, stunned, sad, mad, and collectively heartbroken that this is happening today. This is why I bring up the quote by Martin Luther King Jr. and how relevant "The Fierce Urgency of Now" is. Thank you Heather, you and your family live on in my heart and I will continue to resist through art, speaking out and showing up.
